Eighteen years ago, I arrived in Atlanta from a little village in Haiti and was really broke. I moved into a two- bedroom apartment with my wife and two kids. Since the kids were so young, I could not afford to pay the ridiculous amount of money daycare centers were charging. And so, my wife had to stay home to take care of the kids while I worked at a K-mart warehouse making $145 a week.

To say the least, I simply could not afford to have my apartment look as good as the neighbors. I remember driving all over Atlanta looking for some used furniture. Most of the stores I found had nothing but beat up and overly used furniture. The few that had something decent wanted an arm and a leg.

Unfortunately, I ended up buying from those high-priced stores. But it wasn’t until six years later that I realized that I had gotten ripped off--big time. You see, at the time, I could go to a new furniture store in Atlanta and get brand new pieces for the same price. But hey, I was an inexperienced immigrant, and I didn’t know any better. By the way, there are still used furniture stores in Atlanta that are ripping people off today.

Yes, you might end up saving $40-$50, which is still a lot of money when your debts are high and your income is low. But in my opinion, it would be to your advantage to just go to a brand name furniture store, and buy new furniture.

Do you see what I mean? You simply can’t let people lure you into their stores by promoting low prices on used furniture because that's when they start playing games with you.

First, because of my past experiences, when I took over this used furniture store, I made a pledge not to take advantage of anyone. Second, unlike the other guys, we don’t have too many expenses. My wife and I run a small store, and we only hire a helper or two for delivery or pickup as needed.

Yet, we get lots of calls everyday from people who are either divorcing, moving out of town, or they want to upgrade their furniture. Believe me, many times, my heart goes out to all of these people who call us to sell.

The stories of why they want to sell are heart wrenching. But what’s so sad about it is how some of the other used furniture stores in Atlanta will make some insulting offers to these people because they may be down on their luck.

Now that’s not to say that we don’t buy low. Of course, we are in business to make a profit. But we are not in the business of taking advantage of people because they may be going through some tough times.
